The safe zone in the Voenna Rampa refugee center in Sofia is overcrowded, according to a check of the National Preventive Mechanism to the Ombudsman. The zone was built in 2019 for unaccompanied children refugees with a capacity for 100 people. However, 221 minors are currently registered there, some of whom are accommodated in the gym.
Because of the extremely poor material and living conditions and the insufficient staff, Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva has sent a recommendation to the State Agency for Refugees, in which she calls for an additional safe zone with suitable living conditions to be established as soon as possible. Other requests include the appointment of more specialists to work with children, as well as the observance of anti-epidemic measures and the inclusion of minors in the National Vaccination Plan against Covid-19.
