Bulgaria in pictures: Kremikovtsi Monastery

Kremikovtsi Monastery, located at the foot of the Balkan Mountain range (Stara Planina), some 22 km away from the center of Sofia, is a great place for relaxation and spiritual humility.

The monastery “St. George the Victorious” was built in the 14th century, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It was burned to the ground during the Ottoman invasion in 1382. One hundred years later, a local boyar named Radivoy restored it to honor the memory of his two deceased children, victims of a plague epidemic.
