At the backdrop of the Covid pandemic, a serious rise in the number of abandoned pets has been registered in Bulgaria. At the same time, the number of adopted dogs has increased by 22.5% compared to 2019 and by over 30% compared to 2018. There are 54 registered shelters for stray dogs in this country. This is shown by data in the government's report on the national program for controlling the population of stray dogs, BGNES has reported. In 2020, a total of 20,432 stray dogs were sheltered and 5,553 were adopted.
