Fire erupts in neglected architectural monument downtown Sofia

Photo: BGNES

Big fire engulfed an emblematic building on Vazrazhdane Square in the capital city of Sofia. The fire has been put off and the causes are yet to be investigated.

The building has been unused since 2016 and this is not the first fire in it. It was built as a theater and restaurant "New America" back in 1900. Later it was renamed the "Renaissance" theater. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1940 and after the Allied bombings of Sofia in 1944. It was later a cinema and headquarters of trade unions in the sphere of culture. In 2006 it was turned into a disco with controversial reputation. The current owner has plans to build a five-star hotel on the place of the monument of culture.
