In 2019, 18.4% of the population of the EU aged 15 and over stated they smoke cigarettes daily, indicate latest data released by the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat. 12.6% of the European population state they smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day, and 5.9% - more.
Out of all member countries, Bulgaria has the biggest share of smokers – 28.7%, followed by Greece -23.6%, Latvia – 22.1%, Germany – 21.9% and Croatia – 21.8%. The share of smokers is smallest in Sweden – 6.4% and in Finland – 9.9%. The share of people who smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day varies from 1% in Sweden to 12.9% in Bulgaria.
