Bulgaria reports 50% excess mortality in September: Eurostat

The mortality rate in Bulgaria in September 2021 is 50.2% more than the average for this month in the previous period (2016-2019), according to Eurostat data, quoted by Reuters. According to a report by the European Statistical Agency, which compares additional deaths to pre-pandemic Covid-19 levels, Bulgaria shows the highest additional mortality in the EU, followed by Lithuania, Greece and Romania - all three over 30%.

The high mortality rate in Bulgaria is also confirmed by the latest data published today by the National Statistical Institute on mortality in the country on a weekly basis.
