Utilized agricultural area in Bulgaria increases

The number of agricultural holdings in Bulgaria has decreased by more than 200,000 in the past decade, data of an analysis of the structure of farm holdings in Bulgaria indicate. Meanwhile, the utilized agricultural area is increasing, reporter Veselina Milanova informed.

In 2003, there were more than 665,000 farms in Bulgaria. In 2010, their number amounted to just over 370,000. In 2020, the number of farms in this country stood at under 133,000, as more than 13,000 of them owned no land. 

Meanwhile, in 2003, the utilized agricultural area amounted to 2.905,000 hectares, the analysis indicates. Three years after Bulgaria’ accession to the European Union, the utilized agricultural area reached 3.600,000 hectares. In 2020, the utilized agricultural area in this country reached 3,959,000 hectares. Cereal crops are grown on most of the arable land.
