Stopping timber export could lower price of firewood

Photo: BGNES

By the end of January, I expect the directors of the state forest enterprises to make concrete proposals for measures that will lead to a reduction in the price of firewood. This is what the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Ivan Ivanov has told Bulgaria On Air TV. In order to reduce prices, a moratorium on timber exports could be introduced if necessary, the minister said.

Currently, one cubic meter of firewood costs over 80 euros. This is double the price in comparison to the summer months. According to Eurostat, over 50% of Bulgarians heat their homes using wood and coal. 1/3 of the population use less heating in order to save money, while 27% cannot afford to use heating in winter.
