93% of the newly registered HIV-positive people contracted the infection through sex

More than 250,000 people in Bulgaria took a test to establish their HIV status in 2021, the Ministry of Health has announced.

19 new HIV-positive people have been established since the beginning of this year. 3,721 HIV-positive people have been registered in the country in the period from 1986 until 2021. 93% of the newly registered people with HIV in 2021 contracted the infection through sex, and 6% - through injecting drug use. At 35%, the age group affected most is the 30 to 39-year-olds, followed by the 20 to 29-year-olds. The number of newly registered men is six times higher than women.
