Vine growers demand bigger state subsidies

The state must find a way to subsidize the vine growers. Otherwise, they are facing bankruptcies. Protests are also possible, the President of the National Vine and Wine Chamber Yordan Chorbadzhiyski said in the village of Elenovo, the Municipality of Nova Zagora, after the traditional vine-pruning ritual dedicated to the Feast Day of St. Trifon, patron saint of gardeners and winegrowers.

Deputy Speaker of Bulgaria’s National Assembly Iva Miteva, Italian investor Edoardo Miroglio and mayors of Bulgarian municipalities attended the event, the correspondent of the BNR Stoyan Radev reported. The vine growers insist that the subsidy for the sector increase from EUR 15 to EUR 154 per 0.1 ha. This measure will bring vine growers out of the gray economy, representatives of this sector contend. The new state budget does not earmark funding for vine growers.

In 2021, 2,000 hectares of vineyards were grubbed due to lack of adequate state policy in this sector.
