Last year, 8,488 people became Bulgarian citizens on the basis of Bulgarian origin. Another 5,940 people received Bulgarian documents on the basis of a Bulgarian parent, Vice President Iliana Yotova said. 719 people became Bulgarians through naturalization.
Most of the new citizens are from North Macedonia – 7,696. Those from Ukraine are 1,547 people. 479 Russians have also become Bulgarian citizens.
Among the new Bulgarian citizens there are 1,269 from Albania, 1,145 from Turkey, 1,127 from Moldova and 1,053 from Serbia. 1,926 people regained their citizenship and 188 were deprived of it. 2,988 people were denied citizenship.
In 2020, 16,709 people acquired Bulgarian citizenship - twice as many in comparison to 2019, when the number was 8,887.
