A Special Prosecutor's Office operation is currently underway at the State Agency for National Security (SANS).

According to initial information, it is an investigation against employees of the agency, accused of espionage in favor of foreign intelligence services. Sources of several media outlets specify that the espionage is in favour of Russia.

President Rumen Radev commented the news: "SANS has a strong immune system and is working actively to prevent any breakthrough in terms of espionage activities."

The raid of the special prosecutors happened hours after Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov's statement that the prosecutor's office had not moved pre-trial cases and files related to the activities of 25 organised crime groups.

Later, PM Kiril Petkov stated that a large Russian intelligence diaspora has been formed, working for various interests. “There are Russian agents who have worked specifically against any understanding between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia,” he said and added that the Russian interest was focused on preventing a European future for the Western Balkans. “I don’t know if this news concerns this case but it shows how someone is trying to substitute Bulgaria’s interest,” Kiril Petkov said.
