A new bill envisions encouraging electric mobility and incentives to buy electric cars, Environment Minister Borislav Sandov said at a conference on Transport of the Future and Clean Energy.

In 3 years' time, the Euro 7 standard will be mandatory for cars in the EU, but with its aging fleet, Bulgaria will find it difficult to meet the requirements, experts said.

Currently, half of the cars in Bulgaria are over 20 years old, 5% meet environmental standards, and electrified and hybrid vehicles are below 1%.

"Our goal is to have 30,000 electric cars by the middle of 2026 (compared to 3,000 in 2020)," Minister Sandov said. The Bulgarian state is planning to build 10,000 charging stations, he added.
