The Institute for Market Economics reports that the highest salaries in Bulgaria are in small municipalities with large employers for another consecutive year. Leading are the municipalities in Sreda Gora region, on the territory of which there is a developed mining and related processing industry, as well as in the municipalities with very large enterprises in the energy sector.

The highest average gross monthly salary in the country for 2020 was in the municipality of Chelopech - 1,314 euros, where one of the largest gold mines in Bulgaria is located. In second place is the average salary in the municipality of Kozloduy of 1,168 euros, where the Kozloduy nuclear power plant is operating, followed by Pirdop (968 euros), which has well-developed copper industry.
Sofia Municipality is only in the 5th position, where the average salary is 956.5 euros.
According to the analysis, high incomes are registered also in the periphery of the largest economic centres Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv, due to the development of services in cities, rapid growth in the digital sphere and strong industry in the periphery, which focuses on higher added value and brings higher incomes.
Overall, despite the effects of the pandemic, average wages are rising everywhere.
