Thanks to the Bulgarians in Portugal and their contribution to society, the connection between the two countries and the two peoples is even stronger, said President Rumen Radev at a meeting with representatives of Bulgarians living in the Iberian country during his official visit to Portugal.

In a gesture of respect for the event at the Bulgarian Embassy in Lisbon, it was attended by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Radev expressed his gratitude to his compatriots in Portugal for establishing the name of their homeland in the best way with their leading role in a number of areas such as science, teaching, medicine, economics, IT business, sports and culture.

According to official Portuguese statistics, the Bulgarian community numbers 6,839 people. But there are many more Bulgarians in the country, because some of them already have Portuguese citizenship. Their concentration is most significant in the Lisbon area and in cities with highly developed tourism in the south of Portugal.
