There is agreement within the ruling coalition on reducing VAT on the prices of bread, fruit and vegetables, Minister of Economy Korneliya Ninova said, adding that a zero VAT rate is even being debated.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party is proposing that the reduced revenues from VAT be compensated for by taxing the excess profits of the energy companies – both state-run and private. For a definitive decision to be made, however, the estimates of the Finance Ministry must be seen first. Korneliya Ninova stated further that there is disagreement among the partners from the ruling coalition on two issues – the introduction of a tax-free threshold for incomes, and a price cap for some commodities. According to her, introducing a price ceiling will not result in any market shocks.
