The EU Court of Justice has ruled that Bulgaria has not fulfilled its commitments under the quality of atmospheric air directive. If Bulgaria fails to change this state of affairs, the EU could, once again, file a suit against the country and impose financial sanctions.
“This is, unfortunately, an expected decision, because Bulgaria has systematically been neglecting this issue,” said Bulgarian Minister of Environment Borislav Sandov. “Health is not something that can be replaced, energy is.”
Minister Sandov also commented on the postponed protest by employees from the Maritza Iztok-3 thermal power plant in Dimitrovgrad. The protest was cancelled after it was announced that the power station would resume work. An order has been issued for the plant not to reopen, Borislav Sandov stated.
