The heavy rain destroyed a number of roads in Bulgaria between June 10 and 12. Road maintenance and repair works are underway on Petrohan Pass, where the overflowing Barzia River washed away the asphalt layer and damaged the road. Thus, at least one lane will be opened for traffic within 24 hours.
The drainage of the road network in the town of Tryavna continues. The train service has resumed as the water was drained off the local railway station. Traffic via "Kriv Tunnel" between the towns of Blagoevgrad and Kresna (Southwestern Bulgaria) has been temporarily restricted. Traffic has been diverted to a bypass route due to asphalt repair works.
Last year, no repair works took place on the Bulgarian roads, Diana Russinova, Chairperson of the European Center for Transport Policies, said for the BNR. Russinova contends that the lack of road maintenance has led to such a deterioration of road infrastructure and that the restoration costs will be three times higher than the cost of routine repairs.
