Bulgaria is among the 5 countries with the highest inflation in the EU

In May, inflation in the European Union set a new record and reached 8.8 percent on an annual basis, Eurostat reported, quoted by BTA.  In the Eurozone alone, inflation is 8.1 percent.  As a result of the crisis in Ukraine, in 14 EU countries, annual inflation in May was higher than the European Union-wide average. 

In terms of the rising cost of living, Bulgaria is in fifth place with 13.4% on an annual basis, after Estonia (20.1%), Lithuania (18.5%), Latvia (16.8%) and the Czech Republic (15,2%). 

The data are according to the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). 

On June 15, Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute reported an acceleration of annual inflation to 15.6% in May. In 13 EU countries, inflation for the same period was equal to or lower than the EU average, with the lowest levels in Malta and France (5.8%).
