Increased migratory pressure along Bulgarian-Turkish border

The General Directorate Border Police has registered increased migratory pressure at the Bulgarian-Turkish border since the beginning of the year, compared to the same period of 2021.

At the same time Bulgarian patrols and posts along the border have thwarted over 36,000 attempts at illegal entry into the country. After additional staff were posted at the border, the number of migrants entering the country in May has dropped by 32% compared to April, border police data show. 552 illegal immigrants have entered Bulgaria since the beginning of the year, most of them citizens of Afghanistan and Syria, 64 migrant traffickers have been detained.
