Vice President Iliana Iotova: The EU must regain its leading role

The EU must return to its leading role in regulating the conflict in Ukraine, and not be content with the role of a bystander. This is what Bulgaria's Vice-President Iliana Iotova said at a discussion in Sofia on the topic "The European Union - border security, common defense and enlargement".

Vice President Iotova pointed out that the EU's border security policy has not yet found successful solutions, especially in the context of migration processes. "Member states prefer to build walls and fences, the integration of those arriving in Europe is a key issue," Iotova stressed.

She also raised the topic of EU enlargement. "The political decision to accede Ukraine cannot lead to a rejection of our own criteria or be at the expense of values. The big topic of starting negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia and Bulgaria's position illustrates this fact," Iotova said.

She positively assessed the French president's proposal for a strategic alliance with the countries of the Western Balkans.
