On 15 August Bulgaria commemorates the sacrifice of all doctors, nurses, volunteers and members of the public who have died while saving human lives.
The date has been declared a Day of Salvation as a tribute to Dr. Stefan Cherkezov who, on 15 August, 1963, saved 47 passengers from a burning bus but later died of severe burns.
