Bulgarian scientists study communication between dolphins in the Black Sea

Scientists from Varna have started a project for behavioral analysis of the communication signals that dolphins emit. The equipment has been installed in the Varna Bay by a team of the underwater acoustics laboratory at the Technical University in the city.

The aim of the researchers is to record the sounds made by wild dolphins. They will be compared with recorded sounds of the dolphins in the Dolphinarium in Varna. Then, in the artificial intelligence laboratory of the university, the structure of the signals will be analyzed and they will be grouped.

The project is particularly relevant given the effects of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the large number of warships that disrupt communication between dolphins with their sonars.
