At the climax of the celebrations on the occasion of 145 years of the Shipka epic battles, thousands of Bulgarians from all over the country flocked to the Freedom Monument on Mount Shipka.

Traditionally, Shipka celebrations are held under the patronage of the Presidency of the Republic of Bulgaria.

In her speech during a solemn ceremony, Vice President Iliana Iotova noted: "Shipka's freedom and the memory of heroism are our salvation and unification."
In Iotova's words, Shipka Peak stands out much more majestically than all the others, "because there is no unit of measure for an ideal, for self-sacrifice, for a strong desire for dignity and freedom", where "Bulgarian rebels and freedom fighters earned the honour of their people and left their bones here".

The vice president also pointed out that at Shipka it was Bulgarian rebels, Russians, Moldovans, Ukrainians, Romanians together who believed "in the salvation of a Slavic nation, in its healing and its future, in the fact that it can have its own state" and thus predetermined the course of the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation.
