The Vazov Machine-Building Plants (VMZ) based in Sopot have halted their production processes following heavy rains in the region, the Ministry of Economy said.

Warehouses and production workshops have been flooded and electricity has been switched off to prevent accidents

Deputy Economy Minister Irina Shtonova is expected to visit the plant and inspect the situation on site. If necessary, logistical support will be provided by other enterprises in the system of the Ministry of Economy and Industry.

Meanwhile, a partial state of disaster has been declared in the municipality of Karlovo, 5 km away, due to flooded houses in several villages. The heavy rains have also caused the breaking of a dyke on the Stryama river.

The situation is most critical in Karavelovo, where a second tidal wave flooded the village and people are currently being evacuated.
