Engineer Dimitar Kuzmanov: The Human factor is at the root of the flooding

The indiscriminate logging, and the branches pruned which are left to be carried away by the river when the high water comes are among the main causes of the flooding, engineer Dimitar Kuzmanov from Balcanica association commented for the BNR.

Efforts are currently underway to eliminate the damage inflicted in a number of villages by the heavy rainfall. “The modern logging methods involve cutting awful roads into the mountains for heavy machinery, and along them, water reaches the rivers very quickly,” Dimitar Kuzmanov said further. In his words, logging must be analysed because the region around Stryama River, where flooding inflicted a great deal of damage in several villages, carries a considerable potential risk of flooding.
