The best medication for treating depression is applied in Bulgaria, but there is no comprehensive patient care. This was stated at a discussion on depression which the World Health Organization rates as a leading cause of disability. It was also disclosed, during the discussion, that around 15% of the people diagnosed with depression in Bulgaria undergo hospital treatment. According to Dr. Tsveteslava Galabova, Director of the St. Ivan of Rila psychiatric hospital, psychiatric hospitals in Bulgaria have been turned into care homes. To address this problem a strategy was approved a year ago for taking patients out of psychiatric hospitals and providing them with psychological and social care.
