Bulgaria's largest trade union, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), said workers at the Maritsa Iztok 2 coal-fired power plant are ready to strike.

The trade union organization of the power plant has filed a strike notice demanding a review of the post-Covid Recovery and Resilience Plan due to force majeure. Chairman of CITUB at the TPP Deyan Dyakov pointed out that the fair transition plans for the districts of Stara Zagora, Kyustendil and Pernik, which are still in draft, should also be reviewed.

He recalled the commitment to reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants by 40% by 2026, which he said would be suicide, as the deadline is too short.

Maritsa Iztok 2 is the largest modernised coal-fired power plant in Bulgaria.
