Minister of Justice: We face criticism as there are no convictions for high-level corruption

The Ministry of Justice has prepared all the bills needed under the Recovery Plan aimed at implementing reforms. On October 20, the deadline for public discussion on the Anti-Corruption Law expires, after which a debate in the parliament is to come.

At the end of the week, the opinion of the Venice Commission is expected on the bill prepared by former Minister of Justice Nadezhda Yordanova for seeking criminal responsibility from the chief prosecutor. This is what the Minister of Justice Krum Zarkov told the BNR.

He pointed out that the caretaker government had committed efforts to creating an independent agency dealing with high-level corruption, which would have investigative functions. According to him, in order for the new commission to be effective, it should deal only with corruption at the highest levels of power as most of the EC criticism towards Bulgaria is that there are no convicted persons for high-level corruption.

Zarkov also said that with the current composition of the Supreme Judicial Council, it did not seem realistic to seek responsibility from chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev.
