Historians propose that Bulgaria's national holiday should be May 24

At a scientific conference at Veliko Tarnovo University, 14 historians and academic professors from all over the country came up with a proposal to the nation and the parliament to declare May 24 a national day of Bulgaria.

The address states that May 24 is the only date that, since the middle of the 19th century, has passed and survived through all eras and governments, and is celebrated throughout the Bulgarian ethnic territory.

As reasons, historians point out that the current March 3 was turned into a holiday for political reasons by the dying totalitarian power in 1990. History specialists are also united around the proposal to add more important dates to the existing official holidays of Bulgaria, such as: April 16 - Constitution Day; April 20 - outbreak of the April Uprising; May 2 - day of St. Prince Boris-Mihail; October 6 - Tsar Samuil's Day.
