National Assembly Speaker Vezhdi Rashidov is inviting the Speakers of the Parliaments of Austria and the Netherlands, the countries opposed to the country's Schengen membership, to a meeting in Bulgaria next week. An invitation will also be extended to the presidents of the parliaments of Croatia and Romania. Rashidov made this announcement in Strasbourg, where he took part in the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the European Parliament and held a meeting with his Croatian counterpart.
In his comments after the meeting, Rashidov said that the people of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia deserved to be part of Schengen and not to remain as "orphans on the sidelines". Earlier, European Parliament President Roberta Mezzola also expressed her support for Bulgaria's accession.
