North Macedonia authorities demand name-change of Bulgarian clubs in the country

The Bulgarian club Ivan Mihailov in Bitola, North Macedonia must change its name and is subject to a EUR 10,000 fine.

The Commission for Prevention and Protection from Discrimination in North Macedonia states that the matter is being turned over to the prosecutor’s office of North Macedonia because “the club not only praises Ivan Mihailov, but is not removing controversial content from the social media”.  The club was given 45 days to change its name, statutes and programme, after the authorities in Skopje ruled that they “lead to national and ethnic discrimination, and instill hate and intolerance”. The report against the club was submitted by the Left extreme left-wing party. By law, both the Ivan Mihailov club in Bitola and the Tsar Boris III club in Ohrid must change their names.
