The babies, switched at Sofia’s Sheinovo maternity hospital, have already been returned to their biological parents, caretaker Minister of Health Assen Medzhidiev said. The two children were born on September 13, 2022.  Nearly 3 months later, their mothers took DNA tests. At the end of December it became clear that the babies had been switched.

Three staff members of Sofia's Sheinovo maternity hospital were punished for the baby switch. The medical supervision authorities which probed the case said that the baby switch was the result of multiple violations of the rules and poor supervision at several levels in the hospital.
