Ministry of Interior urges citizens not to stand outdoors due to danger of falling objects

Dangerous wind warning declared across Bulgaria

The highest, red code alert for strong wind due to the speed of the wind of up to 130 km. in an hour has been declared for the regions of Vratsa and Montana today.

A second-degree alert, orange code, has been declared for the districts of Sofia, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Haskovo and Kardzhali. Wind gusts in the region of Targovishte are up to 61 km. in an hour.

A partial state of emergency has been declared in Vratsa. There are over 50 reports of fallen trees, damaged roofs and facades, broken shop windows. In some neighbourhoods and villages, the electricity has been cut. Citizens are urged not to go outside.

In Sofia, 69 reports of fallen branches, trees, billboards and sheet metal have been received by the authorities.

The Ministry of the Interior advises citizens not to stand outdoors because of the danger of falling objects. If necessary, citizens are advised to enter public buildings, subways or other shelter. 

Cars should be parked in an open area, away from power lines, trees and overhanging rocks. 

If amidst nature, people are advised to wait in the lowest possible places until the danger has passed.

The weather on Thursday will remain very windy. Violent winds are expected over Eastern Bulgaria and along the northern mountain slopes.
