Bulgaria is an absolutely reliable ally in NATO. I am proud that we are together in this union, US Ambassador Herro Mustafa, whose mandate in Sofia is coming to an end, told bTV.

"There have been many political surprises in Bulgaria in recent years. They are an integral part of politics," she said, and called on Bulgarians not to be discouraged, despite the frequent elections, because "the people have power and must seek responsibility from their leaders."

According to Mustafa, corruption remains a serious problem and the best defense is a strong judiciary, which must be backed up legislatively by parliament.

The diplomat also emphasized that, despite the special Russian-Bulgarian relations, the country has managed to emerge out of the Russian energy dependence.
