MPs vote for increased control over Prosecutor General

Bulgarians MPs voted in favour of introducing mechanisms for heightened control over the activities of the chief prosecutor and the administrative heads of the bodies of the judiciary after four hours of debates in plenary during the amendments at first reading in the Law on the Judiciary. 

Another text envisages that the National Investigative Service will be removed from the prosecutor's office system and separated as an independent body in the judiciary, and the director of the investigation service will, in certain cases, become the prosecutor in the investigation against the state prosecutor and his deputies. 

After initiating pre-trial proceedings, the head of the National Investigation Service will have to notify the Supreme Judicial Council of the temporary removal from office of the chief prosecutor.
