The special operation conducted in several Bulgarian disticts with the participation of more than 150 police officers is related to reports of a private company which has allegedly submited false data on greenhouse gas emissions produced by thermal power plants in Bulgaria. The operation of the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime and the State Agency for National Security is carried out under the supervision of the European Prosecutor's Office, the BNR’s correspondent in Brussels Angelina Piskova reported.

A private company responsible for verifying the greenhouse gas emissions of thermal power plants and heating plants in Bulgaria is under investigation for allegedly submitting falsified reports to the competent national authorities, the European Public Prosecutor's Office said.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office said that according to the investigation, from 2017 to date, the company knowingly submitted false data for the annual reports on greenhouse emissions produced by TPPs and heating plants in Bulgaria, in order to under-declare their emissions output, under the EU Emissions Trading System. This has allegedly resulted in losses to the EU and the national budgets to the tune of millions of euros, in unpaid amounts for actually-consumed greenhouse gas emissions..
