A passenger train with 350 people on board collided with an oncoming freight train shortly before midnight on Tuesday morning. According to the Greek authorities, 32 passengers have died in the crash and at least 100 were injured. The accident occurred near a gorge some 380 kilometers north of the capital city Athens, an area with railway tunnels and major motorways, the BNR’s correspondent in Greece Katya Peeva reported.
The first two carriages of the passenger train caught fire and were completely destroyed. According to the passengers who eye witnessed the accident, they were full of people, as most of them were students returning to Thessaloniki. Firefighters continue to search under and near the first three carriages hoping to find more survivors under the wreckage.
Most of the injured are in a serious health condition. They were accommodated at hospitals in and near Larissa and Thessaloniki. Volunteers are donating blood in them. No Bulgarians were reported injured.
