More than 77,000 Bulgarians have put their signatures down to the European Citizens’ Initiative entitled “Fur Free Europe”, the NGO Campaigns in Activism for Animals in Industry (CAAI) has announced.

The organisers of the initiative call on the European Commission to introduce an EU-wide ban on keeping and killing animals for the purpose of fur production. They also ask for a ban on placing such fur and products containing it on the EU market. By the end of the year the EC is expected to publish a proposal aimed at improving the European legislation for the humane treatment of animals.

The initiative has been supported by 1.7 million EU citizens.
