Bulgaria has a good capacity to significantly increase the production and supply of ammunition to its current EU customers, EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton told Politico after his visit to Bulgaria.
"Countries that have stockpiles of ammunition will be able to provide it to Ukraine, and manufacturers will be able to increase their production to replenish these stocks. It was very important for me to get this guarantee," he added.
Asked by the newspaper about President Rumen Radev's "pro-Russian stance", the commissioner said he saw no particular political risks. Asked whether it was risky to rely on the Russia-friendly Bulgarian elite, Breton said he was encouraged by the positive signals from the caretaker cabinet. He stressed that he was not worried about the country's credibility when it came to replenishing EU countries' ammunition stocks.
