MEP Andrey Novakov: Institutions that have no place at the border hinder traffic

There are a number of institutions at border crossings that have no place there. This is what Bulgarian MEP Andrey Novakov said for the BNR on the occasion of the kilometer-long queues at the Danube Bridge near Ruse-Giurgevo during the weekends, because of which drivers wait at least 20 hours to cross the border.

According to Novakov, inspections that are carried out there by services such as the traffic police, revenue agency, toll police, can be carried out inside the country so as not to hamper the traffic at the border points.

"The Border Police and the Customs authorities have a place at the border," Novakov believes.

According to him, at borders within the EU, such as Bulgaria-Romania, there should be a separate corridor for trucks from EU member states. Novakov is the author of a legislative change in the Regulation on international transport corridors, the vote of which is pending. It envisages that the inspection of one truck will last 1 minute in order to overcome the "blockages" at the borders between EU countries.
