"Ivan Boyadzhiev - The Discovery" is an exhibition dedicated to an extraordinary collection of paintings by old Bulgarian masters currently on display at the gallery of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA).
The works are over 150 and include paintings, drawings and prints from the first half of the 20th century. It is owned by the descendants of the merchant and collector Ivan Boyadzhiev /1888-1972/, owner of one of the galleries on the one-time Targovska (Commercial) Street in the capital. He opened it in 1927 under the name "Gallery of the 6" after the idea of the artists Nikola Tanev, Boris Denev, Ivan Lazarov, Ivan Penkov, Sirak Skitnik and Dechko Uzunov. In the documentary Impressionen aus Bulgarien (Impressions from Bulgaria), filmed in Hamburg, Ivan Boyadjiev talks about the paintings in his collection.
Ivan Boyadjiev's art collection has never been shown to the general public before. Among the artists whose paintings can be seen until 30 March in the UBA gallery are Dechko Uzunov, Nikola Tanev and Boris Denev, Alexander Mutafov, Konstantin Shrkelyov, Ivan Hristov, Petar Morozov, Mario Zhekov and other masters of the brush.
