Significant decline in the number of North Macedonians becoming Bulgarian citizens

In 2022, a total of 1,992 North Macedonians received Bulgarian citizenship, according to data of the Commission on Bulgarian Citizenship at the President. 1,639 Ukrainians also received Bulgarian citizenship, followed by Turks - 1,290, Serbs - 556, Albanians - 517 and Moldovans - 476.

The data are similar to the previous two years, but then people from North Macedonia who became Bulgarians by passport were 7,696 in 2021 and 9,098 in 2020. In the past year, 202 Israelis also received Bulgarian citizenship. A total of 7,410 people acquired citizenship on the basis of Bulgarian origin during the past year. 356 Russians received Bulgarian citizenship in 2022, while in 2021 they were 479. A year earlier, their number was 485.
