Scientists have found pink flamingo nests in Bulgaria for the first time

Nesting pink flamingos have been spotted on the territory of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds has reported. About 80 birds are already laying their eggs by the Atanasovo Lake near the Burgas salt pans. The newly formed colony consists of about 600 birds and the number of nests will probably increase in the coming days, scientists said.

The flamingo is sensitive to human presence. In recent years, it has become a new symbol of Burgas. That is why the municipality has started to include the bird’s image more often in its advertising materials, the municipality's press center reports.

In addition to flamingos, over 280 species of birds, including various kinds of pelicans, herons, etc. live in Lake Atanasovo.
