Immortal Regiment procession held despite Sofia mayor's ban

Participants in the so-called Immortal Regiment procession in Sofia on May 9 held their march, although it was banned by Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

The event, which was to mark the defeat of fascism, took place under extremely tight security measures as the march headed to the Soviet Army monument in the centre of Sofia.

At the memorial there were people chanting for the dismantling of the Red Army monument. Ivan Takov, chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party in the capital, told supporters that the party would never allow the monument to be removed.

The event was also attended by Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova, who said May 9 was a holiday for both Bulgarians and Russians.
