The European Stroke Organisation (ESO) declares 9 May European Stroke Awareness Day. This date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the European Stroke Plan which will run until 2030.

In Europe, Bulgaria leads the negative statistics on stroke-related morbidity and mortality. According to Eurostat, one in four Bulgarians is at risk of having a stroke. In 2021, the country registers one cerebrovascular accident every 12 minutes.

A measure to address this problem is the free preventive check-ups that have been organised for stroke patients at a number of locations in the country as part of the national campaign Life After Stroke until the end of May.
