Since 2018, more than 70 reports have been filed against Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev with allegations of violations and/or crimes committed by him, the Prosecutor's Office reported. The signals were submitted by citizens, lawyers, civil associations, media, non-governmental organizations and associations. The reports were sent to the Specialized Prosecutor's Office and after its closure by a decision of the National Assembly, the reports were sent to the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office - the only institutions in the country that can carry out checks and investigations against magistrates, persons with immunity and members of the Council of Ministers.
The Prosecutor's Office also states that according to the current legislation, there is no obstacle to conducting an independent investigation against the chief prosecutor. Regardless of the official position of the person against whom the report is directed, the standard is the same and "suggestions that the Attorney General is uncontrolled, unaccountable and omnipotent do not correspond to the truth", the representatives of the prosecutor's office concluded.
