MFA : Bundestag declaration does not override European decisions

The declaration of the Bundestag is an internal act that does not change the decisions taken by the EU Council in July 2022 on North Macedonia's European path. This is the position of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, published on the ministry's official website. The occasion is a declaration of the German Parliament in support of the integration of the Republic of North Macedonia into the European Union. This declaration does not change either the decisions already taken by the European Council for the implementation in good faith of the Treaty of Good Neighbourly Relations with Bulgaria or Sofia's national position, confirmed a year ago by the National Assembly.

In its position, the Foreign Ministry also points out that the Bundestag supports the amendment of the Constitution of North Macedonia to guarantee equal rights and freedoms for Bulgarians with the other minorities in the country. The document does not encourage attempts to renegotiate or not respect the terms of the compromise reached in 2022, the Foreign Ministry stresses.

We recall that on Thursday the Bundestag adopted by a majority the proposal that Germany should actively support Skopje on its path towards the European Union. The resolution states that "Skopje should adjust its constitution as agreed with Sofia, but Bulgaria should not set additional conditions for the accession of the the Republic of Macedonia to the Union".
