By the end of this month, people hit by the floods will receive financial assistance under a simplified procedure. Social Affairs Minister Ivanka Shalapatova, who visited the flood-stricken town of Berkovitsa, announced that all applications could be processed now, in June, and aid could be paid out once approved.

Minister Shalapatova noted that the purpose of her visit was to discuss with the local administration and the residents whether there was a need for additional measures to assist the flood victims. The Minister commented that with her visit she also wanted to send a message that "people are not alone in their distress and that the state is there for them".

She pointed out that the situation in Berkovitsa has been brought under control and, at the request of the municipality, funds have already been allocated to hire unemployed people to help in flood-affected households with cleaning, food delivery and other assistance.
