The State Agency for Refugees has registered a record number of requests for international protection, the institution recalled on the occasion of today's World Refugee Day. Out of a total of 20,407 applications submitted, 5,141 refer to children, including 3,348 unaccompanied minors separated from their families. In addition, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 160,899 people have received temporary protection in Bulgaria as 589 of them are unaccompanied children.

The figures show an 86% rise compared to 2021 and represent the largest number of asylum seekers since the creation of the country's asylum system in 1993.
